INTERIOR PAINT HOUSE-HOME PAINTING YOUR KITCHENS AND WET AREAS
In my section today of “WHAT INTERIOR HOUSE PAINT GOES WHERE AND WHY” we’ll look at home painting your kitchens and wet areas. Hygiene is the most important number 1 rule: Because of the amount of moisture and airborne grease generated by cooking, washing up and showers and the like, every surface must be easy to clean. Check it out, are yours? The domestic or household kitchen needs to be kept hygienic and you still need it very washable. Over the years the demand for finishes in kitchens and wet areas has changed slightly. Satin acrylic finishes were always used, now the most popular interior house paint applied is a good quality low sheen.

In my opinion for washing and repelling grease you can’t go past the satin acrylic. It’s not as porous as low sheen, in fact looking along a wall painted in satin gives you the impression there’s a good thick but very smooth finish and easy on the eye presentation. I just love the look of it and its beautiful to apply! It just slides off your roller effortlessly. In saying that I do still use low sheen in some circumstances, for instance brand new homes that I have to paint for a builder, because that’s what the specs demand. If it was my house I would go the satin option because I like my showers really hot and steamy. But sometimes kitchens are very much part of the living areas and it’s hard to cut the wall off with two different types of paint . In this situation use low sheen, that’s quite ok. They’re both as good as each other but satin definitely has the edge, horses for courses as they say. Also nowadays there is a trend away from clinical operating theater kitchens, where beautiful stainless steel and two pack finish cupboards and doors occupy the kitchen or lots of natural timbers and curtains instead of blinds over windows are now very widely used in the modern home. One thing sticks out in relation to these materials, they are all very washable and can be kept clean easily. The same goes with bathrooms and the laundry, they all have surfaces that are easily cleaned, that’s why when home painting you need to go with the satin option. You won’t regret it. So I hope I’ve helped you out with more good information on what interior house paint to use for your kitchens and wet areas. Don’t forget if you’ve got a question you need answered that I haven’t yet covered drop me a line. I have a wealth of experience under my belt for home painting and I’m hanging to help you out and solve your dramas. That’s what I’m here for and to put a bit of colour in your life so to speak HA……….Catch ya…. HAPPY PAINTING.………….Wayne the painter.

The five biggest mistakes people make when home painting woodwork!!
Painting woodwork is probably the most fiddly and time consuming part of home painting. There is a lot to consider and a lot of preparation involved. What I mean by woodwork are things like doors, frames, skirtings and the like. Now to the five biggest common mistakes when home painting your woodwork.

The first thing people think of is that the existing coat of paint unless your painting over varnishes or polyurethanes has to be taken back to bare wood or timber. This is not always the case.

Do this only if it has badly broken down. If you’re just changing colour and generally painting, a good solid rub down with sandpaper will do the trick.

Not undercoating with the correct product. An undercoat is designed to bind and seal the surface back to give you a neutral plane to work with,an undercoat can be called a platform builder.

Not using good quality paints and materials and I’m talking about finish coats now. Whether it be gloss enamel, satin or semi gloss good quality is always the best option. Buying the you bute special bonza paints that has probably been mixed in a high school science lab is NOT COOL MAN. Good quality enamels and let’s not forget water based and environmentally produced paints and glosses are your best bet. Remember this! {quality products produce quality workmanship.}

The most crucial common mistake when home painting your woodwork is a bad quality BRUSH. The bottom line is, if your willing to use a broken stick as your finishing brush, expect your finish product to look like #!@$ also. A brush with a beautiful soft bristle and these days they make good quality synthetic ones that can handle the miles quite well, this is your best option, and these are the only types of brushes I use these days whether it be for oil or water based paints. For the beginner I suggest a 63 mm sashcutter. This type and size brush will cover all your bases.

So last but not least the number 5 mistake that people make when home painting woodwork is not forgetting steps 1 to 4. You have to have a system when doing woodwork then you can’t go wrong. Prepare, undercoat and do your finish work, but introduce a system for yourself and keep repeating it. This way you’re guaranteed not to forget things and make mistakes.

Remember home painting is all about repetition and doing the same job over and over again, you do this and you’ll rip through your work with ease. Catch guys and remember………..HAPPY PAINTING……………Wayne the painter

INTERIOR PAINT HOUSE-INTERIOR PAINTING OF WOODWORK AND TRIMS
Hi and welcome back to “What Interior House Paint goes where and why” for interior painting of your woodwork and trims! If your reading this entry that means you’re interested in getting the right interior house paint on your trims or woodwork. So lets get right to it. Firstly, it’s so very important to prepare and have woodwork ready for finish coats.
It’s not the interior painting of top coats that make woodwork or for that matter any surface look good. It’s the prep that you have to get right, but I’m here to talk about finish or top coats. There’s a couple of good choices when it comes to trims and woodwork.

There are acrylic finishes which are water borne or water based and are very good for the environment and ozone friendly too . Years ago acrylic glosses or interior glosses just couldn’t cut it. Their formulas were very thick and didn’t have the gutsy coverage that was needed to get the job done.
But these days they not only saw the need to go green and easy on the environment but put thought and technology into their formulas. The Result is they have produced a real high quality interior gloss that can match or is equivalent to its counterpart gloss enamel or oil based interior house paint.
Now oil based glosses or enamels have their good points also and some of these points is why I enjoy using this product over the water based one. Such as when using or applying oils, depending whether or not the surface has been prepared properly, can get a beautiful glossy mirror finish that you could brush your hair in or put your make up on with, in which case can give you a very rewarding finish.
Myself, I prefer the oil type especially when it comes to doors and trims because they tend to get knocked around a bit and enamels tend to take the hard knocks that little bit better. They are a little trickier to apply but practice makes perfect right!
Now if both of these types of paints are applied properly you can get a very tough, durable and impressive finish that has good cleaning properties and will last a long time. It’s your call really, will you go water based or oil, what ever choice you make can be a good one. Good luck with your interior painting and I’m sure you’ll make the right one. So stick around and I’ll teach you what interior house paint to apply for your kitchen and wet areas in your home….. and happy painting………Wayne the painter

The five biggest mistakes people make painting walls!!
Painting walls tends to be easier than ceilings, they’re more accessible and it’s a matter of just pulling furniture away from the walls and covering the floor and your away. Even though painting walls is more clean cut, mistakes can still be made. Here are the five biggest ones when you’re painting walls.

Lack or too little preparation. What I refer to is filling cracks and holes prior to painting. Your prep work is vital in determining the outcome and finished product of any job your doing. When it comes to painting, remember 95% is prep and 5% is finish work. You stick to that rule and you can’t possibly go wrong. OK !

Putting too much filler or Spackle on the walls. I’ve seen some people and been to rescue missions where people have got this wrong and it looks like either a couple of things have happened, firstly it has looked likethey stood back and threw it at the walls from a distance or their two year old child got into the room while they where getting coffee and had a plaster party. IN which case I’ve spent hours sanding and getting the walls back to a decent surface to work with. There really is no need to over fill your walls , take your time relax have some fun throw some filler or Spackle at someone enjoy the process of preparing your walls and you say ” yeah right what ever”. But seriously now just a couple of light skims if you don’t get it the first time do a second skim it will save hours of backbreaking work trust me.

Failure to stir your paint and strain it through a stocking to remove bits of foreign junk and stuff. Just because it’s a new tin of paint and they’ve shook it up in the shop doesn’t mean it’s clean and doesn’t mean it’s stirred well. Make it a practice every time you open a tin of paint new or old to do these two important things and your walls won’t look like the surface of the moon and have bits of alien material on them.

Painting walls with the wrong technique. When applying paint to walls GET A ROLLER OR EXTENSION POLE. Don’t roll it by hand, you need nice long strokes from the ceiling to the floor and you won’t need to work from a stepladder everything can be reached from standing. You need to put plenty on and lay it back off into the wet edge. This method allows you to keep flowing and moving without a break in your coat, allowing for a nice even consistent coat of paint…… oh and don’t forget to second coat. A nice build on the wall makes for better cleaning and if you had to fill your walls prior to first coat it stops bad flashing or patchiness in the final product.

Tool mistake, a cheap and nasty roller sleeve. Try not to go for synthetic or sponge sleeves, although the synthetic sleeve can be used if you have no other option. The problem with these sleeves is they just can’t get enough paint on and when your talking walls you need good flow and plenty sliding on. What you need is! and i swear by them, they are the only ones I use and have done for years THE SHEEP SKIN OR LAMBS WOOL ROLLER COVER. I personally prefer the later one myself lambskin or lambswool. It leaves me with a nice smooth finish even if i really lay the coat on heavy. Sheepskin sleeves are a bit coarser which probably makes them better for things like brickwork or rough surfaces. I use them mainly for rendered brickwork where I can put plenty on. They take a bit to load up at first but once loaded they’re smooth and easy to use. Try both synthetic and lambswool, I guarantee you’ll go to the lambswool cover, they wash out a whole tonne easier and once cleaned out properly will last you years and years. You can’t beat natural fibre products when it comes to painting walls

……….happy painting folks………….Wayne…..the painter ……..

INTERIOR PAINT HOUSE – PAINTING WALLS PART 2
Welcome back to “What interior house paint goes where and why” for painting walls the second part. Well let’s get straight into what interior house paint to use for our second type of walls, remember they were the most common walls, plasterboard, drywall or gyprock plasterboard.

Now when painting walls of these types they need to be sealed also, using an…

acrylic sealer undercoat…Unlike the oil based type we used for wet set plaster the water based product also penetrates the plasterboard.? It seals its cardboard like fibres back preparing it ready for its top coats. The best finish or coats of paint to apply again is a good quality interior low sheen acrylic. There are some great low sheen’s on the market. You can also purchase it in eco friendly or low VOC paints that are really good for the environment and have very low emissions. Very easy on your snout so if your interested in going down that path ask for it when buying your paint.
Don’t forget when painting walls always use two coats of paint and get a nice thick durable coat on, it makes cleaning a whole lot easier and it’s easier to put on as well. As long as you’ve prepared your walls and filled properly you’ll get a nice pro looking finish with low sheen.
Put time into prep work you will get good results remember this! Painting is 95% prep and 5% finish work.OK! I’ll have you painting like a pro in no time.
By the way if your walls have existing coats of paint and you’re looking to repaint as long as you`ve prepared your walls correctly, two good coats of low sheen will be fine to redecorate.
Well I still have a lot to cover and I would love to share my knowledge of what has made me the tradesman I am today. So please keep your eyes cast on this spot and I will endeavor to share the secrets of the painting trade with YOU! and you’ll have a paint finish you’ll be proud of.
Remember a good quality low sheen is what you want when painting walls. Splash some paint around and colour your world he he! That’s it for what interior house paint goes where and why when painting walls of the second types.
Catch ya and happy painting……………………Wayne the painter

INTERIOR HOUSE PAINT – PAINTING WALLS PART 1
Welcome back to “What interior house paint goes where and why” for painting walls. Like my last entry “of what interior house paint goes on ceilings” I’m going to explain what materials {paint} to apply when painting walls. So put your seat belt on, stick your drop sheets down, kick the cat and the dog out of the room and get ready to be injected with good, honest solid information about interior house paint for walls.
Firstly there are two basic types of walls, you`ll bound to have one of them, cause if you don’t your house will fall down!(God I kill myself )Anyway they are:

1.Plaster or wet set walls. They have even been known to be called soft plaster walls.
2.Probably the most commonly used material in the building industry, Plasterboard or gyprock plasterboard.
We’ll talk about No1 in this post. These are the most important walls to get right because the biggest mistake people make when doing this type is not sealing their walls. The most common reason is cost cutting which is fine until the paint falls of the walls, then it’s a huge job. I’ve seen it first hand and it’s an ugly situation you don’t want to be in. Literally the whole house will end up this way and its a job that never ends so don’t scrimp on your sealer. Get it right the first time and believe me you’ll sleep better too.
So a good quality oil based sealer binder is the answer. It does exactly what it says. It seals from moisture and other elements and binds the surface together to give you a nice surface that your finish coats can grab hold of and stick hard to. You’ll get no peeling dramas or paint falling off later down the track and it’ll never have to be done again. Now try to use a good quality paint where it counts especially when it comes to painting walls. Walls get marked easily, animals lean against them and furniture scuffs up against them. The big one, if you have children, they see them as a big blank canvas and begin their first attempts at art class 101. I’m sure most of us have been there, right!
Now a pretty standard coating system for painting walls has always been and for 24 plus years of my painting life is {low sheen acrylic} its very washable with might I add warm soapy water….. a touch of dishwashing liquid usually does the trick. Low Sheen Acrylic is very user friendly and like I said if it’s a fairly premium product is very nice and easy to apply. So don’t forget when applying paints use two coats and get a nice thick durable coat on.

Well that is all for Nos 1 of walls, stay tuned for my next post to read all about the second type of walls in “What interior house paint goes where and why”.

Catch ya and Happy Painting …………………………Wayne the painter

The five biggest mistakes people make painting ceilings!!

HOW TO PAINT A ROOM- CEILING

When looking at how to paint a room, particularly a ceiling it’s not really an easy task. It’s above your head and some ceilings can be as high as 2.4 metres. (some even higher like 8 to 10 metres) In your average home they range from about 2.6 and a little bit higher, so getting a good job can be difficult. Lets look at the five main mistakes that people make.

Cheap and nasty equipment. A brush that looks like a broken stick instead of nice soft long bristles. Your brush is one of the most important tools, if not the most important tool. Get a quality brush. When looking after your brush it will last you for years. For me, because of the number of houses I rip through a brush will last me four or five houses, and I use it for everything ceilings, doors, walls, frames pretty much everything. Quality gear is the key.

Using bad quality paint or ceiling paint. Your gear and paint will decide whether you end up with a good job or a bad one. Don’t buy cheap quality paint. Buy a reputable brand paint that way you know it’s going to last the miles and you can get budget quality paint you just got to find it.

Not putting enough paint on the surface. Don’t be scared to put paint on. Not enough paint looks thin and streaky and very patchy and with light running across the surface. So load your roller sleeve up and put plenty on, but remember when loading the coat up don’t forget to lay the coat back off or take the thick edges out of it, thicker the better. A little tip on how to paint a room

Failure to move any furniture from the room. Ceilings take up the whole floor space and you need to be able to move around to get to every corner. It saves getting paint on your stuff and it only takes a couple of minutes to move. Getting a good clean run at the ceiling prevents a wet edge drying out on you and the trick to how to paint a room for ceilings is keeping a wet edge and moving quickly but cleanly across the surface.

Not using an extension pole to reach the ceiling from the ground. I’ve seen people climb a step ladder and roll it by hand man! What a back breaking job and you have no chance of keeping a wet edge. Yes an extension at first can be tricky but after a couple of runs you’ll get it right. You can load your roller right up and cover a lot of area in one big hit which in the long run will give you a pro looking job and save you a whole heap of time.

So the nuts and bolts of how to paint a room, in this case the ceiling is to keep it simple and make it fun and you’ll be painting ceilings like a pro in no time. So happy painting and I will be covering this subject of the five biggest mistakes people make on different tasks and see if we can’t nut some problems out and get you painting like a pro. Wayne … the painter

INTERIOR PAINT HOUSE – HOME PAINTING CEILINGS
“WHAT INTERIOR HOUSE PAINT GOES WHERE AND WHY” – HOME PAINTING YOUR CEILINGS! There are heaps of paint products and finishes in the market place but what interior house paint do I use where and why you ask? Well I have to start somewhere so I will start with the most commonly used ones around your home, just to stop the confusion for now.

Soooooo what do you apply when you’re home painting your ceilings, this is an easy one. Ceilings tend to have a lot of light and shadows thrown across them due to the nature of their horizontal plane. Vertical planes such as walls repel shadows and light.

So you need a product that’s going to hide all the sins and imperfections that plasterboard or dry wall dishes up. For example joints in the plasterboard or dry wall will show up more in ceilings than they do on walls. So you need the lowest sheen or shine on that surface as possible. The best product for that is a flat acrylic paint or simply ceiling flat. Flat ceiling paints have great coverage and hiding power, they are washable in water which makes for easy cleaning of your brushes and equipment when you’re done. [or to clean up that dreaded paint spill that may have occurred over the pet cat or dog that was pleasantly sleeping by ] Anyhow one thing they’re not known for is their cleaning or scrubbing qualities, because it is a very porous paint once it has dried. It is designed for one thing and one thing only its hiding and covering abilities.

THE basic tools and things you will need when home painting! A ROLLER, BRUSH, EXTENSION POLE AND OF COURSE YOUR CEILING FLAT.

“Go on give it a go then you can tell your mates you did it yourself, but they probably won’t believe you because it looks so professional”. So I hope that helped you home painting your ceilings. Remember ceiling flat is your product. Watch this spot while I pluck my way through this subject on “WHAT INTERIOR HOUSE PAINT GOES WHERE AND WHY” and you’ll be able to read about walls and what we do to them. CATCH YA AND HAPPY PAINTING…………..Wayne the painter.

HOME INTERIOR DECORATION CAULKING TIPS PART2
Welcome to the second part of caulking or gapping sealant which is as I mentioned such an important part of your home interior decoration prep work. [Make sure you read my first post on this ]
The cut tip of the nozzle shapes the bead. If you twist or angle the gun, the shape of the bead will change. Once you have found your angle move along without twisting or shifting the gun. When coming to an obstruction or corner you might need to change angle, but keep your flow around corners and don’t stop the momentum you have gathered.

Now you will find you have to stop somewhere, so on the gun you are using somewhere near the trigger there will be a release mechanism or small lever [some models do not have these]. Depress the lever after your stroke and this will release the pressure off the gun. Then you can start again.
A wet rag is very handy, it’s good to keep things clean. It also plays a part in the finished product. After you have finished your bead of gaps use the wet rag over your finger to smooth and seat the gaps or caulk into the angle your working with.
Don’t press too hard [ lightly] to even out the surface of the bead. Myself I prefer to use a bare finger its quicker and you can feel what the gaps is doing. Also when buying a tube of caulk or gaps make sure it’s paintable. There are sealants on the markets that are silicone based and no matter what you try paint will not stick to it. SO MAKE SURE ITS PAINTABLE!!
So once again I hope this has helped you out with home interior decoration, with a few practice runs it’s a very easy little job to do …….happy gapping…………
And now here’s a tip from the top……when your finished with your tube of caulk or gaps and you know you won’t be using it for a while push a screw or a nail down the hole that you cut in the nozzle, this will stop the sealant in the tube from drying out. I’ve stored tubes for up to 9 months, ripped the screw out and used it again……….That’s it for caulking or gapping sealant the important prep work for your home interior decoration catch ya folks…………………………Wayne the painter
